Welcome to VICTORIAN WAR MEMORIALS.

"This site contains photographs of publicly accessible war memorials located throughout the state Victoria which were taken for the purpose of recording all the information – particularly the names – on the memorials. This project was undertaken as a retirement hobby in 1994 and followed the publication of “War Memorials of Victoria”, in that year, by the Victorian branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia. The book was the first source of information as to the distribution of war memorials in Victoria. It was principally concerned with those memorials, which were local centres of commemoration, however many other memorials of lesser significance were not included and this project was extended to include those. Photos of avenues of honour and “Lone Pine” trees were also taken, but these have been found to require separate category in their own right and are currently not listed at this time pending further development.

Today in 2008 there is far greater interest than there was back in 1994 and since then there has been a significant resurgence of interest in memorials. Most have been refurbished and new ones have been erected with such activitivies expected to continue. Learning of all these changes has been a problem in the absence of any coordinated centralised source for this information, consequently some photos may be obsolete, and some memorials may have been moved by municipal councils to other sites. Many old and new memorials have been discovered quite simply 'in passing' on my travels. Therefore, this collection is by no means comprehensive, but is offered as a source of information." - Bob Christey.
